Civil Service interview coaching

Specialist in Civil Service coaching

If you’re preparing for a Civil Service interview, you’ll already know that success isn’t just about having the right experience, it’s about how you demonstrate it under assessment conditions.

I provide specialist Civil Service interview coaching for candidates applying across England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, supporting both external applicants and internal Civil Servants preparing for promotion.

Coaching is always tailored to the assessment framework you’re being assessed against:

  • In England, interviews are assessed using Success Profiles

  • In Northern Ireland (NICS) and the Scottish Government, selection is usually based on competency-based frameworks

My role is to help you understand what the panel is really looking for and how to show it clearly, confidently, and convincingly.

Coaching for Civil Service interviews – how can I help

I’m Elizabeth Conley, founder of Interview Skills Clinic and a specialist Civil Service interview coach with over a decade of proven coaching experience. I have an excellent reputation and am an apporoved internal coach across Civil Service departments delivering both one-to-one coaching and interview courses to internal candidates as well as providing one-to-one coaching for external candidates.

I work with candidates:

  • From AO and EO level through to Director and Director General

  • Across all departments and professions

  • Applying externally or preparing for internal promotion

  • Getting ready for schemes such as the Future Leaders Scheme and Senior Leaders Scheme

Many of the people I work with are strong on paper but find that applications and interviews don’t always reflect their capability. Coaching focuses on closing that gap and helping you to stand out as the strongest candidate.

If you’re at Grade 6 or above, you may also be able to access internal funding for coaching through your department.

What Civil Service coaching focuses on

Civil Service selection is designed to test more than experience alone. At both application and interview stage, assessors are looking for judgement, evidence, and clarity of thinking.

Through coaching, I’ll help you:

  • Understand what assessors are really looking for at each stage of the process

  • Interpret Behaviour and Strength criteria accurately

  • Select the right evidence for the role and level

  • Structure written examples and spoken answers so they are easy to assess and score

  • Show insight and depth without over-explaining or diluting your message

  • Feel more confident and controlled,  on the page and in the interview room

The aim isn’t to give you templates or scripts. It’s to help you think, write, and respond at the level the panel is expecting, whether you’re preparing an application or sitting in front of them. if you requite detailed support with yur CV or Personal Statement, you can find more information on the CV and application coaching page.

One-to-one Civil Service coaching

I offer one-to-one Civil Service coaching to support you through both applications and interviews, depending on where you are in the process and what you need most.

Application coaching

Application support is tailored, because no two applications,  or candidates are the same.

I typically allow:

  • Three-five  hours to support a Personal Statement, and

  • Two-three hours to review and strengthen a Civil Service CV

Some candidates need focused structural input; others benefit from deeper work on evidence, alignment to behaviours, or level of judgement. We’ll use the time where it adds most value.

Interview coaching

Interview coaching is more structured and usually takes place over two to three sessions.

This typically includes:

  • Preparation for behaviour, strength, and motivation questions

  • Clear insight into how panels assess and score

  • Practical feedback you can apply immediately

  • Sessions delivered online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams

  • Video recordings, so you can review and practise between sessions

Whether we focus on applications, interviews, or both, coaching is always shaped around your role, your level, and your objectives.

Prefer a live group training option?

If you’re preparing for a Civil Service interview and want expert guidance in a group setting, I also offer a live group Civil Service interview preparation webinar.

Because the session is delivered to a group rather than individually, it’s priced lower than one-to-one coaching, while still giving you clear insight into how Success Profiles are assessed at HEO–G7 level.

It’s a good fit if you want professional calibration and clarity, without the cost of bespoke coaching.

Online interview training (AO-EO Level)

If you are preparing for an AO or EO interview and want structured guidance at an accessible price point, I offer a pre-recorded Civil Service interview preparation course designed specifically for entry-level Success Profile interviews.

This option is ideal if:
– you need immediate access to training
– you are applying at AO or EO level
– one-to-one coaching is not the right investment for you

Coaching fees

I offer bespoke Civil Service coaching, with fees based on the type and scope of support you need, not the grade or seniority of the role.

Interview coaching is delivered through a flagship one-to-one coaching approach, with the amount of coaching tailored to the individual. Some candidates need focused preparation over a shorter period; others benefit from more in-depth support.

Application coaching is always bespoke, as the time required varies depending on the role, the application format, and the level of support needed.

Let’s chat about coaching

Interview coaching is personal, and it isn’t right for everyone. I work with committed candidates who are serious about progressing within the Civil Service and performing at their true level under assessment.

If you would like to explore Civil Service coaching, please complete the consultation form outlining the role, grade, deadline and stage of the process, and attach your CV and any draft application material.

I will review your information and come back to you personally. If it looks like we are a good fit and the timing works, I will send you a link to book a consultation so we can talk things through properly and agree next steps.
